
James Tolhurst-Close
James is a director, choreographer, performer, and creative with extensive experience across theatre production and performance. Holding a Bachelor of Design (Distinction) from the Whitehouse Institute, he combines creative and technical expertise with a strong passion for the performing arts.
James spent five years as Associate Director and Tutor at Hunter Drama, mentoring young performers and contributing to the development of emerging artists. Alongside his directing and choreography work, he has a strong passion for design, particularly costume, and enjoys bringing together the broader artistic vision of a production to create cohesive and engaging theatrical experiences.
Among James’ directing and choreography credits, highlights include & Juliet and Sweet Charity for Free-Rain Theatre Company, Disney’s The Little Mermaid (SYMT, 2023), Peter Pan (Hunter Drama, 2019), Spamalot (The Very Popular Theatre Company, 2021), Rock of Ages (Hunter Drama, 2019), Chicago (Hunter Drama, 2018), Wicked (Metropolitan Players, 2016), and Shrek The Musical (Hunter Drama, 2016).
As a performer, James has appeared as Mr. Braithwaite in Billy Elliot, Angel in Kinky Boots, Chistery in Wicked, Neleus in Mary Poppins, and the loveable Squeegee Man in RENT, alongside ensemble roles in Spamalot, Funny Girl, Jesus Christ Superstar, Hairspray, The Phantom of the Opera, and Grease. His dance background includes competing as a finalist at the USASF Dance Worlds in Orlando, Florida.
